Should Memorial Services Be Videotaped

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
Ecclesiates 3:4

A time to say goodbye, a time to see old and dear friends, a time to spend the last few minutes with a loved one and you can not attend.

Is it proper or ethical to videotape a memorial service?

Videotaping memorial services is quickly becoming more and more common as we continue to enter into a world that separates us from loved ones, thereby preventing some family members and close friends not to be present and say goodbye.

At the request of the immediate family or the memorial home I’ve videotaped some 30 memorial services in the past two (2) years. One thing to remember is that a memorial service is, in effect, a celebration of life. It is a tradition we use as a way of saying our last goodbyes, remembering fond memories of an earlier time, seeing people who are/were very close to us. Very much like a wedding, it is the beginning of a new chapter. So, like a wedding, should it be recorded?

The answer depends on the family and how comfortable they feel with it. Obviously, if they ask to have the ceremony/internment videotaped, then they feel comfortable with it and that should be respected. On 2 occasions I videotape the memorial service because close family members could not attend – one was from Brazil and some family members of the deceased, still in Brazil, were not able to attend. The other was because a wife could not attend her husband’s mass and memorial service because she herself was too ill to attend.

According to Alan Naumann, a leading authority and author of "Funeral Videos" pg 10,
“Funeral Videography is more than just producing a slide show – it is using video to remind loved ones of the life that was lived. This can happen through the compelling use of photos in a video, and also by recording the service itself – especially if there is a time of sharing on the part of friends and family.”. "...A video allows children who are too young to understand what has happened to view the service with adult eyes later in their life. Video also allows the life of the deceased to be shared with friends and family around the world. This can even take place instantly through streaming video on the internet.”

What to look for when you hire a videographer to film a loved one’s memorial service?

Unobtrusive style – Someone who will blend in and not be conspicuous. Someone who will treat the event with respect and not get in the way of the service. Someone who will stay in one place and not move. Someone who will concentrate on the event and not the be concerned with the guests at the event.

Professional Equipment – both audio & video. This aids an unobtrusive style. This allows the videographer to obtain the best picture and sound from the ceremony without using bright lights and large banks of microphones. Small professional wireless microphones can be placed in inconspicuous areas of the facility, i.e. the podium, the altar area, perhaps on the officiator, etc.

Your website is the first impression a viewer has to your firm, your products, your services, and yourself. It provides the viewer with an insight to your personality. The use of video on your website can only enhance what you provide.

Businesses that use video attract keep visitors on their websites for a longer period of time. Using video is cost effective and much more powerful than simply using text or pictures.

Through the use of video you can provide them with information by letting the view live testimonials from satisfied clients, a quick “how we do it clip”, the pros of using your product or services, or simply a “Meet the President” or “Meet the Staff”. Barbara and Ed's Proposal Story

As many of you know, Ed and I got engaged over the Memorial Day weekend. Here's the story:

We had made plans to go to Wildwood, then Cape May for the day a few weeks ago. We woke up early and left and went to the Wildwood boardwalk first to walk around. Just walking up and down the boardwalk, window shopping. There was a craft fair so we looked around there. By that time, Ed suggested we go on some rides at Morey's Pier. We bought tickets and went on the spinning "Tea Cups" first. Ed went crazy spinning the big wheel in the center and I sat there with my eyes closed, praying I wouldn't throw up :) Then afterwards, I suggested a 'slower ride', so we went on the Ferris Wheel. We got on the Ferris wheel and sat across from each other (simple physics). We talked for a little bit, held hands and said mushy couple stuff to each other. Then the ferris wheel stopped when we were very close to the top.....

Ed then said to me, "You know how much I love you, right?", then I said "I love you too". He then took off his sunglasses and reached for my hand and said "I have a question to ask you---" my reply "Are you serious???!!!" "What are you doing for the next 40-50 years of your life?" At this point I was sobbing and my hands were covering my face and I kept saying "Are you serious??!!!". I got it together and he reached in his pocket and pulled out the box with the ring and said "I love you so much. Barbara Euculano will you marry me?" I kept crying and eeked out a yes between sobs :) He put the ring on my finger and told me that the center stone was taken from his mother's ring (she passed away 3 years ago after a 10 year battle from breast cancer). This of course made the ring even more invaluable and I started crying again.

We got off the ferris wheel and Ed made some calls, and I called my parents. They of course knew because Ed had told them and asked for their blessing. Karen, Ed's sister, called me and told that she told her sons (Steve-10 yo and Gabe-4 yo) that morning and they were SO EXCITED because now they can call me 'Aunt Barbara'.

It was a beautiful day and we're both still walking around on Cloud 9. We're so fortunate to have such a loving and supportive family and network of friends :) <3 Thanks again for all your warm wishes and lovely words. We love you all!

On Sunday, April 4, 2010, I had the pleasure and privilege of videotaping the Pentecostal Church of Dover's 11 AM Easter service. It's a beautiful church that services some 500 families. The service included a media presentation, dramatic play, and a cardboard testimonial that included about 15 members of the church. The pastor is Pastor Trout who concluded the service.

This was a 2 camera shoot. One camera, Sony Z5u, was used as the primary camera located in the middle of the aisle and the other camera, Sony Z1u, was located on the altar area of the church. Both are high definition cameras. The primary camera was manned and operated by me and the secondary camera was operated remotely and unmanned.

We did a live feed to a projection system that was displayed on screens located on the walls of the church. We ran a video feed from the primary camera (Z5u) to their projection system and the end result was awesome. To view a short 3 minute clip of the dramatic play and see the effect of using 2 cameras, simply click on "Dramatic Play".

Andrew Markowitz's Bar Mitzvah was on Saturday, December 19, 2009. It was a great, crystal clear day, except for the 2 feet of snow that fell during the first major snow storm of the season. Although many family and friends braved the storm that day to attend Andrew's Bar Mitzvah, it was decided to postpone the reception until this past Saturday, March 27, 2010. The reception was held at Congregation Beth Emeth on Lea Blvd.

The challah was cut by both of Andrew's grandfathers and 14 candles were lit by family and friends. The DJ was Craig & Company. To view a 6 minute clip, click "Andrew's Reception".

Here's footage from our 1989 trip to Florida's Walt Disney World. Barbara was 12 and Vince was 9. Outside of visiting Walt Disney World we also visited Cypress Gardens, Gatorland, and Cape Canaveral. Cape Canaveral was preparing for an unannounced military launch and we just happen to view it. It was fantastic. The footage was captured with an old analog, hand held, camera, my first. Amazing how far technology has come in the past 20 years - from analog, which is difficult to view, to crystal clear high definition. To view a 4-5 minute clip click "Florida Vacation"

Well the snow stopped falling and, if you were like me, you dreaded the shoveling. However, after my wife and I were finished we took a few minutes to see how beautiful the snow was in its pristine state and we walked around the neighborhood. Here's some of the footage I got. Hope it brings a smile to your face. Click "Winter Images" to view the 4 minute clip.

10 Tips on How To Shoot A Professional Video Using A Few Basic Concepts

Clean your video camera lens regularly. Get a good cleaning fluid and put some on a micro clothe then clean the lens. If you have a lens brush use that first, then clean the lens.

Know your video camera. Practice before your vacation. Know all the bells and whistles that are available to you. Know when to use them and the results you will get once you do use them. Don’t ruin your video by using functions you haven’t tried.

Use a stabilizer, i.e. tripod, monopod, spider, etc., when using the LCD. Use the view finder without using a stabilizer. Keep your shoulders close to your body and support the bottom of the camera with your left hand. Try to stand by something permanently grounded to support your body and minimize movement. Keep in mind the greater the close up the more movement will show on your video.

Don’t walk while taking video.

When zooming do it quickly and then keep the zoom, either in or out, for at least 15 seconds.

When panning, moving the video camera right to left or vice versa, do it slow and steady. Twist your body from the waist and do not move the camera.

Enjoy your vacation – Don’t take hours and hours of footage that you will never watch, just get a sample of shots that display everything you did.

Watch your background – don’t get trashcans, unsightly wires, in the shot. Move to another location to remove these obstacles.

Frame your shots – your subject does not always have to be in the center, however, there should be some basic composition to your shots. If you want a person in the shot while showing background, place the subject to the right or left.

Tell a story & Have Fun

What's New, , Euculano California Vacation 1999, PTM Video, Wilmington DE, Personal Touch Memories, Wilmington DE

Well I was able to complete another vacation video. This one is from our Central California/Nevada, 1992 trip. We flew into San Francisco and stayed there for a few days visiting Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, Lombard St. Then we drove over to the coast and down route 1 through the Monteray Peninsula, Hearst Castle, east over to Death Valley, then to Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, and Sequoia National Park. The trip was 2 weeks long. Barbara and Vince were about 14 and 11, respectively, and well Carol and I were younger. To view the clip simply click "California Vacation"

What's New, Hawaiian Vacation, VHS Transfer to DVD, Wilmington DE, Personal Touch Memories Video, PTM Video

I've been doing a lot of transfers from VHS, JVC, and Super8mm tape to DVD for clients. Well, I decided to transfer and edit some of our old vacations. This is the first one I've transferred.

From July 6, 1988 to July 20, 1988 we took a trip to 4 of the Hawaiin Islands, Oahu, Kauai, Hawaii, and Maui. Barbara was 11 and Vince was 8 while Carol and I, well, let's just say we were younger.

Some of the activites we did was the Polynesian Cultural Center, a Hawaiian Luau, and took a helicopter ride over the Waimea Canyon. We also went to the Thurston Lava Tube, visited Pali Lookout, the windiest place on earth, and drove the Hana Highway to the 7 Sacred Pools in Maui.

The latter was quite interesting. It was 4 hours from Lahaina on this very narrow, winding road. On our drive we past several waterfalls, banana trees, and taro fields. The ultimate destination was the 7 Sacred Pools.

The 7 Sacred Pools was a religious site for the Hawaiian people. It started on a high plateau and 7 waterfalls cascaded down, 1 to the other, to the bottom which was the largest and that led to the Pacific Ocean. You could swim to the final waterfall which we did. Just as the last of the pools flowed into the ocean there was a sign "Swim at your own risk - Shark area". I had just purchased my first camcorder shortly before we left and I taped everything, over 6 hours of footage and I edited it down to 30 minutes.

I encourage each parent, grandparent, or guardian to invest in a camcorder. Keep the battery charged, keep it handy, and film all type of activities; playing, sleeping, crying, talking. Just a few minutes is enough. It will pay dividends over the years when you watch them 20 years from now.

To view a 6 minute clip, which includes 3 minutes of video and a 3 minute photo montage, of a 1988 video where the video was shot with an old analog camcorder, the footage is 22 years old, and where the pictures are faded, but the memories vivid; there's even some shots of me with hair (how old can you get) simply click Euculano Family Hawaiian Vacation.
